While her younger brother Barack grew up in the US and Indonesia Auma Obama s childhood played out at the other end of the world in a remote village in Kenya the birthplace of the siblings shared father In this memoir Auma shares her own story as well as recollections of and experiences with her famous brother
"Engrossing... Especially poignant are the sections that tell how, as a college student, Auma finally got to know the mother who relinquished her as a baby. Despite the level of recognition Auma achieved during the 2008 presidential election, there are no airs here. The prose is simple, and Auma's honest, straightforward storytelling makes her an instantly likable narrator."
Touching, poignant, and thoughtfully candid, And Then Life Happens is Auma Obama's personal account of growing up in rural Kenya and coming of age halfway across the world from her younger brother, Barack, whom she knew only through their father's stories until their heartfelt meeting as adults in Chicago. Ever ambitious and driven, Auma narrates a story of love, family, and perseverance with refreshing honesty and compassion, recounting her lifelong struggle to balance a desire for education and activism while staying true to her cultural values and family heritage. And Then Life Happens is an intimate self-portrait of the president's sister, her life studying and living abroad, and her eventual return to Africa to found her own youth-focused organisation. It is an outstanding journey of self-discovery and unconventional love.Â
