Based on community health practice in eastern Africa, this new edition has used examples of problems, practices and solutions from all over Africa to meet the needs of a wide readership. It places emphasis on the community-based approach throughout. The sequence of topics has been rearranged into six sections the principles and practice of community health, community health interventions, tackling communicable diseases, a new section on tackling non-communicable diseases, the organisation of community health services with the need for management, information services and capacity building, and community health in the 21' century. Community health draws on a wide range of disciplines demography, sociology, epidemiology, health management and economics to support its specific activities. These include health promotion, child spacing, environmental sanitation and the control of communicable diseases, and the increasing public health importance of non-communicable diseases. These services have to be organised to cover the whole population, with attention on special groups such as mothers and young children, school children, orphans, the disabled, workers, refugees, the internally displaced and the elderly.
