For The Record -The Inside Story of Power, Politics, Lawmaking & Leadership in Kenya (Aden Duale)

For the Record has the radical openness of a tell-all book. It is peppered with candid recollection of key events, dates and private conversations that illuminate the thought process of some of the most prominent leaders in Kenya. It exposes the blunders and successes of Kenya’s collective leadership over the past decade. In a way, it reads like frank self-assessment — warts and all—from a grassroots lawmaker with a national profile, a  clear-eyed introspection by a connected politician with access to the inner sanctum of power.

In this book, Duale reflects on the philosophy of the hustle. He shows that even if you have a mentor opening doors for you, you must put in the hours, the toil, the sweat and the tears. In the end, with God, everything works out.

For a man who served in a House of records that the Legislature is, working closely with three presidents and one prime minister, Duale had to tell his story. This riveting book needed to be written for the record.

The tumultuous reign of President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Jubilee Party remains one of the most intriguing political periods in Kenya. In For the Record, Aden Duale, the first Leader of Majority Party in Kenya, and the longest-serving legislative playmaker of the Kenyatta Administration, reveals the political architecture of power, and the unofficial local and geopolitical intrigues that informed national priorities.

He opens up about his political tutelage under Prime Minister Raila Odinga, former presidents Mwai Kibaki, Uhuru Kenyatta, and his personal journey with the current Kenyan President William Ruto.

The book reveals that for majority of Kenyan politicians, the currency is betrayal, treachery, hypocrisy and greed. For the reticent minority, political work is about personal determination to change lives, strategic focus to sustainably empower people, keeping public interest first and about self-actualisation!

Duale also gives a useful analysis of political patterns going back to 2007 when Uhuru, then Leader of Official Opposition, abandoned his oversight perch and joined the Kibaki Administration ahead of that year's election. As the sun set on Uhuru's presidential tenure in 2022, he once again switched sides, and backed long-time rival-turned-ally Raila Odinga for the presidency

The second time was personal for Duale, because Uhuru's decision came with unfair political targeting-he was fired as Leader of Majority Party. Also, because Uhuru had publicly betrayed and ruined decades of friendship and political comradeship with Ruto, then Deputy President. And then Ruto won the election.

Aden Duale was born in 1965 in rural Garissa in the North Eastern Region of Kenya. He worked as a teacher of history and economics before venturing into retail and wholesale business. He fell back to his pastoralist roots and became one of the biggest commercial livestock farmers in Kenya.

His political career began more than two decades ago. Duale has been elected four times on four different political parties in four different elections. He served as an assistant minister in the Grand Coalition Government between 2008-2011.

In 2013, he became the first Leader of Majority Party in Kenya, a position created by the 2010 Constitution. He was unceremoniously removed from the position in June 2020, in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic.

In 2022, he was appointed the Cabinet Secretary for Defence serving with his close friend and President William Ruto. A committed Muslim and community leader, a loving husband and hard-working father, Duale lives in Nairobi and Garissa.
