I'll Take Some Self Love With That

by Cece Ojany-Bekhor

Have you read many memoirs written by modern day Africans? Africans who aren’t refugees or in politics? Neither have 1... I'd really like to though. And that’s one reason I wrote this book.

For 10+ years I’ve worked with leaders from all over the world, as their wellbeing and leadership coach. Clients from diverse cultures, of different genders and working in diverse industries. So I hear a lot of stories , Stories that inspire, amaze, shock. Stories of adventure, stories that make me laugh out loud. When relevant, I'll share with my clients my own stories of past triumph and tragedy. Their responses have been very telling. A mixture of realisation (“Oh, I'm not alone”), relief. and connection to another human being- who just happens to be their coach.

So after years of this, I realised that it’s time to write a book. I wanted to share my stories with a wider audience in the hope that you, dear reader, will learn something. Just like I’ve learned from the many memoirs I’ve read over the years.

So come on a journey with me. From being born and raised in this rollercoaster city (Nairobi), to the pros and cons of exposure to the Kenyan 8-4-4 education system. Through the ups and downs of international student life. The single life, the married life. Journey with me through getting jobs and then starting my own business (and the secret sauce that helps me keep going all these years later). The births I’ve experienced, the deaths. The paradox of parenting... all of it, dear reader. The good times, the tough times. And my global adventures in search of mental health and wellbeing. But more importantly- in search of self
love and self acceptance.

The main reason I wrote this memoir though, is so that my daughter, Ajany, could know about her mum firsthand. Don’t most of us, after all, wonder how our parents became how they are?

Life is a grand adventure. I hope reading about mine will inspire you.

And I look forward to reading YOUR story, one day soon.
