The Ethical Dimension of Community

by Benezet Bujo

THE ETHICAL DIMENSION OF COMMUNITY There is no doubt that the modern person needs moral norms, based on mutual understanding and seen as binding for all. This is especially true with regard to the urgent and manifold questions that stir the world today. Nearly everything that had been taken over from the West was questioned in Sub-Saharan Africa, and this included Christianity, with its philosophy and theology. The way of thinking also called inculturation, brought concrete results especially in theology, whereby ethical questions were treated rather marginally. So far most ethica! studies have been restricted to marriage problems; few have tried to tackle the foundations of African ethics. This book does not intend to carry out a systematic study. The thoughts here presented are rather meant to give an impulse for further reflection, by which new guidelines may be found for the systematic reflection on African ethics. (From the Preface)
