Waiting for Darkness is, however, Wachira’s first major fiction work. It is a simple but powerfully gripping story of normal people: greedy people like Kioi. Beautiful and loving people like Kwekwe and Lisa. Adventurous and naive people like Mukami. Careful and determined people like Murimi.

Devout and trusting people like Tabitha. But it is in Waiga’s reckless personality that we really come face to face with the self-destructive, often dangerous, aspects of the human nature. We are compelled to travel with him in his dangerous pursuit. We empathise and hope with him sometimes, but often disapprove harshly as he goes about his sad life. But neither we nor anyone else can help Waiga. We can only watch helplessly and follow along Waiga’s eventful journey to that fateful evening when he finds himself waiting for darkness.
