There is an overpowering feeling of fatigue and a biting sense of loss in each segment of life in Africa — decades of deceit and crude force, terror, profanation, mass killings, ethnic feuding, dead economies, exiles and refugees, degraded women and children, etc. It is a sick rotting society that even conventional religion has lost the potency to cure. Tired! is a poetic summation of Africa's quagmire. It is based on the poet's rural Uganda of the first half of the 1980s where fear, machetes and gunfire rule day and night. With great simplicity, the poet creates an orphan bog, Kasolo, and the spirit of his dead mother, Nalumu, in a country village, Kisagala, to movingly and for all time capture vivid impressions of his tired world and moot some interesting formulae for overcoming.
