The Junior Readers Series has been specifically designed to encourage reading for pleasure and to satisfy the supplementary reading needs of children in Upper Primary School. Wide and repeated reading of books in the Series should help improve both their written and spoken English automatically.

We first met the Black Hand Gang in the book, The Black Hand Gang. They are a neighbourhood group and the members live in the eastern part of Nairobi. They are Onyango, Waithaka and his sister Jane, V.J. Patel, Peter, who has a bad leg and Hassan. The gang has made a lot of friends by trying to help people. This story starts when Onyango and V.J. are in Standard Eight.
