READ WITH YOUR CHILD
Enjoy quality time with your child by reading together. Your child will love books for life and learn better if you follow these ten easy steps. 
1. Read with your child in a quiet, relaxed setting such as bedtime. 
2. Make it fun by reading the whole story with expression using a lively voice. First aim for enjoyment of the story. 
3. The next time you read the story, point to the words as you read. 
4. Over time, encourage your child to try and read the words or story to you. Even when they become independent readers, show interest in what they read.
5. Check for understanding by asking easy questions about the pictures, characters, and story, but please do not turn the session into an exam! 
6. Now that they have had a chance to think about the story, encourage your child to fill the reading diary. 
7. Read what they have written. Be positive. Remember to sign each diary entry. Shower your child with praise! 
8. Use the opportunity to bond and convey your values. Make lessons learned in the book even more relatable. For instance, reveal a similar personal experience and what you learned from it. Invite your child to share if anything like that has ever happened to them. 
9. Buy your child a variety of fun books such as picture books, comics, audio books, and information books. 
10. Inspire your child to rate books highly. Let your child see you reading your own books!
